Dining at California Grill

Hey hey! Happy Hump Day! I hope you are all enjoying your week. I have to admit, I am more than ready for the weekend already, what about you?

This morning started with a 50 minute run/incline walk and 10 minutes of planks. I am praising Jesus with worship music hard this morning, and I even listened during my workout too. I don’t know about you, but I really need the extra inspiration and boost today.

I’m coming at you today with another Disney post from our most recent vacation! I hope you are enjoying my reviews as much as I have loved typing these up, and living them, haha! Missed any of the other fun Disney posts? Don’t worry, you can find our room at Saratoga here, dining at the Grand Cafe here, dinner at Chef Mickey’s here, saving money for vacay here, dining at Cape May Cafe here, and dining at ‘Ohana here.

Dinner at The California Grill

The California Grill holds a very special place in my heart because we dined here the night after Michael proposed (which feels like a lifetime ago), so we always like to go back to celebrate our love, and it just so happened this time (like last year) we were celebrating our two year anniversary. California Grill is located at the top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and can only be accessed by a specific elevator located near the check-in desk on the 2nd floor.

I was super excited to dine here (like always) because they have a Vegan Unplugged/ Allergy Friendly menu, which I asked to see. Also, I must add I did not say that I had an “allergy” when checking in. I didn’t want to complicate things, but I did mention to our waitress that I was vegan and wanted to look at that menu as well. She had no problem with that and brought me over that menu. Unfortunately I did not take pictures of the menu (next time folks, I promise), but they had many options from pizza, soups, salads, sushi, and then that Vegan Unplugged menu where you picked 4 options off the menu of I think around 13 items.

We started off with a bottle of their Fairytale Celebration Cuvee…since we had that exact bubbly at our wedding may I add! 😉

As we were sipping our bubbly, we noticed the sunset was absolutely beautiful, so we stepped out on the balcony to take in the scenery. I mean, just LOOK at those views!! SO breathtaking!!

When returning back to our table, our waitress brought us over some sourdough bread and some gluten free/vegan rolls for me. However, those rolls were not prepared correctly and were just a plate of sponge rolls. (Yuck, remember what I said about some people don’t know how to prepare these? If this happens to you, kindly ask them to warm them up in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds). But, I didn’t even need those rolls because Michael and I both ordered each a pizza for our appetizer. I really wanted to try a vegan pizza, and I explained that to our waitress asking if I could have the vegan pizza, without tofu, and mainly with some veggies? So I think the chef made up a veggie pizza with roasted garlic, instead of sauce (holy moly was there a lot of garlic), olives (ummm, the only veggie I don’t like), and some greens. Even though I pretty much picked everything off the pizza (like I always did as a child anyways…HAHA) it was good and crispy! Michael got (I think?) the pepperoni pizza.

For my meal, I (surprise!) asked if I could get the lettuce wraps from the Kid’s Menu on the Allergy/Vegan Menu. Haha…because obviously, I am still like a child. Luckily the chef was able to make that for me with no fuss! The wraps were filled with squash and zucchini and served with hummus on the side. I skipped the hummus and ate those beautiful and delicious lettuce wraps. YUM! Michael got the Oak-fired Filet of Beef, served with mashed potatoes, and green beans.

The food was delicious and we were stuffed! But, just like last year, I called ahead to order a celebratory mini cake replica of our wedding cake. This year it was so sparkly and even cuter than last year’s cake. I think Michael was surprised (well I hope so, because it was all to surprise him) but I think he also kind of figured it out when I asked if he wanted something for dessert and after he quickly declined, I kind of made it seem like he just had to make some room in his belly for some dessert. Haha. 😉

I ordered this cake following THIS blog post and called the Contemporary Resort Bakery directly. The cake I ordered was the Mini Cake with white scrolls, and a chocolate Mickey hat on top. The sparkles were even a surprise for me, so I was SO EXCITED!!!! Along with our celebratory cake, our sweet waitress gave us two (additional, after we finished the bottle of Fairytale) free glasses of bubbly!!

The cake was the same flavor as the bottom tier of our wedding cake (oh, the memories); white cake with strawberry mousse filling. It was not vegan or gluten free or allergy friendly, but I know you can order vegan/allergy friendly cakes from Disney World, and from Erin McKenna’s Bakery at Disney Springs!! Because of this, our waitress also brought over a bowl of berries for me. I couldn’t get enough of how adorable the cake was, and how sparkly it was!! It was PERFECT and so worth the phone tag I had to play with the Contemporary Resort Bakery (please be advised, if you need to order a cake, please do yourself a favor and start calling/leaving voicemails at least two weeks before, because they need 48 hours to create a cake for you and you don’t want it to come down to the day before when you realize you have yet to order a cake)!!

At California Grill, you can even watch the fireworks from the Magic Kingdom, but we didn’t stay for them this time. I feel like with the Happily Ever After Fireworks Show, you HAVE to watch it inside Magic Kingdom (well, at least once) because of the projections on the castle, but watching from the California Grill is awesome too because you get to watch from the balcony, and they even dim the lights inside the restaurant and pipe in the music too. It is magical 🙂

If you can’t tell, we just love dining at the California Grill. We always love the exceptional service we receive every time we dine there, and the food never disappoints either. If you are looking for a more ‘fancier’ dinner experience while in Disney World, I highly recommend getting reservations for California Grill!!

Have a beautiful day! Xoxo ♥♥

  1. So sweet and thoughtful of you to get a replica of your wedding cake for your husband! Both of those pizzas looked really good, and the sunset was gorgeous! Glad you had a fun night!

  2. What a fun idea to have the cake re-created. Was your original wedding cake vegan/gluten free? I hope so. There is nothing quite like cake for a big celebration. After reading these recaps I think I’d love to know how much you guys budget for food while on vacations? How much you budget for home, etc? I personally struggle with food budgets when I travel AND when I am at home BUT I need to get better at it.

    1. Our cake was not vegan or gluten free.

We don’t really have a “budget” for food, as our food costs can be a little high due to fresh fruit. But I did publish a post on how I save for vacations! 🙂 we just know when we travel that we are going to spend a lot of money on food and stuff, so we are prepared!

      1. Thanks for your honesty. I think I’m todays society there is always the expectation that we try to save as much as we can and you guys must be doing something right to afford your fantastic vacations. I also feel like it’s important to but the foods your actually going to eat instead of just what’s on sale if that makes sense. I know my parents help me with me a good budget a bit because I’m a picky eater and with all my running and exercising I need all the nutrition I can get which equals a LARGE bill which makes me feel guilty. I guess I just need to do what works for me. Have a great weekend!! Loving the Disney recaps!!

      2. I totally understand, but I did include some tips about what I do in my post about saving money for our vacations! 🙂 I completely agree about a large food bill, our grocery hauls (which seem like everyday, because they sometimes are) can be pricey due to fresh produce! Xoxo have a wonderful weekend!!
